Lil Durk’s family walked out of federal court celebrating after the rapper secured an important legal victory ahead of his highly anticipated August 20 trial. But while supporters are calling the ruling a major win, the legal battle surrounding the OTF star may be far from over.
During the hearing, U.S. District Judge Michael Fitzgerald reportedly rejected prosecutors’ attempt to introduce additional racketeering allegations connected to separate incidents in Atlanta in 2019 and Chicago in 2022. Those accusations will not be included in Durk’s upcoming trial involving the death of Stephon Mack, a relative of rapper Quando Rondo.
Durk’s father appeared relieved outside the courthouse.
“It went really well,” he said. “The judge favored us and ruled in our favor today.”
The decision immediately sparked excitement among Durk’s supporters. Lil Baby reportedly reached out with a supportive phone call, while members of the OTF circle expressed hope that Durk could soon return home. However, the ruling does not mean the main case has been dismissed. Authorities may still pursue the excluded allegations in separate proceedings later.
Durk’s attorneys are also challenging the conditions of his detention. His legal team has requested an investigation into reports that the rapper has spent months in solitary confinement after allegedly being found with an Apple Watch. Supporters argue that such an infraction would normally result in a much shorter disciplinary period.
His lawyers may seek house arrest before trial, which would allow Durk to communicate more freely with his defense team and prepare for a case that could determine the future of his career.
Prosecutors, meanwhile, are expected to present evidence they claim connects Durk to an alleged murder-for-hire plot targeting Quando Rondo. Court filings reportedly reference a photograph showing Durk posing near a large amount of cash, which authorities allege was connected to a payment arrangement. Durk has not been convicted, and his defense is expected to challenge the prosecution’s interpretation of the evidence.
The government may also rely on cooperating witnesses and footage surrounding King Von’s fatal 2020 shooting. Prosecutors are expected to argue that Von’s death provided a possible motive for the alleged retaliation.
For Durk, the latest ruling is unquestionably a victory—but it may only be the opening round. With witnesses, disputed evidence and millions of fans watching, the August 20 trial could become one of the most explosive hip-hop court battles in years.
