An Alabama mother has been sentenced to two consecutive life sentences after pleading guilty in a heartbreaking case involving the death of her 1-year-old son, Kahleb Collins, and the disappearance of his older brother.
On Monday, Heather Leavell-Keaton, 38, was sentenced after entering guilty pleas to multiple charges, including felony murder, aggravated child abuse, abuse of a corpse, and first-degree domestic violence, according to Alabama prosecutors. Toddler Was Found Dead in 2019
The case began in September 2019 when emergency responders were called to a home in rural Alabama after receiving reports of an unresponsive child.
Authorities found 1-year-old Kahleb Collins deceased. Investigators later determined the toddler had suffered extensive injuries consistent with prolonged abuse.
As detectives continued investigating, they discovered Kahleb’s 2-year-old brother, Rylee Collins, was missing.
Search for Missing Brother Continues
Despite years of searches involving local, state, and federal agencies, Rylee has never been found.
Investigators believe the child is deceased, although his remains have not been recovered.
The disappearance remains one of Alabama’s most heartbreaking unsolved child cases, and authorities continue to ask anyone with information to come forward.
Mother Admits Role in Case
Under the plea agreement, Leavell-Keaton admitted to charges connected to Kahleb’s death and the abuse that occurred inside the family home.
She received:
- Two consecutive life sentences.
- Additional prison terms on several related convictions.
According to prosecutors, the sentences ensure she will spend the remainder of her life in prison.
Father Previously Convicted
Kahleb’s father, John DeBlase, was previously convicted in connection with both children’s cases.
In 2024, he received multiple life sentences after being found guilty of murder, aggravated child abuse, abuse of a corpse, and charges related to Rylee’s disappearance.
Prosecutors said evidence showed both children endured repeated abuse before Kahleb’s death.
