The Charles Manson murders, also known as the Tate-LaBianca murders, were a series of gruesome killings committed by members of the Manson Family, a cult led by Charles Manson, in the summer of 1969.
Manson, a convicted criminal and failed musician, had gathered a group of young, mostly female followers in the late 1960s and convinced them that he was a messianic figure, a savior that would lead them to a new world order. He preached a philosophy that he called “Helter Skelter,” which he believed was an impending race war that would result in him and his followers rising to power in the aftermath.

By that time, actress Sharon Tate was a rising star in Hollywood having appeared in several films and television shows, including the films “Valley of the Dolls” and “The Fearless Vampire Killers.” On the night of August 8th, 1969, Tate was hosting a dinner party at her home in the Benedict Canyon area of Los Angeles. She was joined by her friends Jay Sebring, Voytek Frykowski, Abigail Folger, and Steven Parent.
The same night four members of the Manson Family, Charles “Tex” Watson, Susan Atkins, Patricia Krenwinkel, and Linda Kasabian, broke into Sharon Tate’s home. They were under the instruction of Charles Manson, who wanted to commit a high-profile murder to start what he called “Helter Skelter”.
Once inside the house, they tied up Tate and her friends, Jay Sebring, Voytek Frykowski, Abigail Folger, and Steven Parent, before brutally murdering them with knives and a rope. The Manson family members brutally stabbed Tate 16 times and killed her unborn child as well. They also killed Sebring, Frykowski and Folger by stabbing them multiple times. Steven Parent, who was visiting the caretaker of the property was also shot to death.
The Manson family members wrote the word “pig” in blood on the front door and “Helter Skelter” on the wall, in reference to Manson’s belief in an impending race war. The murders were particularly gruesome and 𝓈𝒽𝓸𝒸𝓀𝒾𝓃𝑔, and the fact that Tate was a pregnant actress made it even more tragic.
The next night, Manson himself accompanied other members of the family, Leslie Van Houten, Steve “Clem” Grogan, and Patricia Krenwinkel to the home of Leno and Rosemary LaBianca, where they killed the couple. The Manson Family members wrote “Death to Pigs” and “Rise” in blood at the crime scene.
Hironically, the Manson Family was arrested for other crimes, such as auto theft and probation violations, and the police found evidence linking them to the Tate-La Bianca murders. Manson and several of his followers were arrested and charged with the murders.
Manson’s trial began in June 1970 and it was a media circus, Manson himself often disrupted the proceedings. The prosecution argued that Manson had orchestrated the killings in order to trigger Helter Skelter.
After a long and highly publicized trial, Manson and three of his followers, Susan Atkins, Patricia Krenwinkel, and Leslie Van Houten, were found guilty of first-degree murder and sentenced to death. But their sentences were later commuted to life in prison after the death penalty was abolished in California. Charles Manson, the leader of the cult, died in prison in 2017, while the other members are still serving their life sentences.
The Manson murders shocked the nation, and Manson became one of the most infamous criminals of the 20th century. The case continues to fascinate people due to the brutality of the crimes, the cult-like behavior of Manson and his followers, and the fact that many of the victims were high-profile celebrities. It also brought attention to the counterculture movement of the late 1960s and the issues of 𝒹𝓇𝓊𝑔 use, free love, and anti-establishment beliefs.
The Tate-LaBianca murders have been the subject of numerous books, articles, documentaries, and films, and the case continues to be studied by criminologists and sociologists. The Manson Family’s story is a chilling reminder of the dangers of manipulation and brainwashing, and the tragic consequences that can result from blindly following a charismatic leader. It’s a story of how one man’s twisted vision and manipulation led to the death of innocent people and left a lasting impact on the nation.
