Josh Duggar has returned to court in another attempt to overturn his federal conviction, appearing at a virtual hearing just weeks after his younger brother Joseph Duggar was arrested in a separate criminal case.
The former 19 Kids and Counting star, 38, attended the April 15 hearing remotely from federal prison, where he is serving a 151-month sentence after being convicted in 2021 of receiving and possessing child sexual abuse material.
According to reports, the hearing focused largely on whether Josh filed key legal paperwork before the required deadline. The issue is considered critical to his latest appeal, with the court expected to decide whether his challenge can move forward.
Josh has filed multiple appeals since beginning his prison sentence, but each previous attempt has been unsuccessful. Earlier this year, he hired a new attorney in hopes of reviving his legal fight to overturn the conviction.
The court appearance came just four weeks after Josh’s brother, Joseph Duggar, was arrested in connection with allegations involving a child during a 2020 family vacation in Florida. Joseph has pleaded not guilty and requested a jury trial after being extradited from Arkansas. He was later released on a $600,000 bond and returned home to Arkansas with his wife, Kendra Duggar.
Following Joseph’s arrest, Josh released a statement through his attorney expressing support for his brother while saying he understood the intense public scrutiny surrounding the Duggar family.
His attorney argued that Josh knows firsthand how criminal allegations can become amplified because of the family’s high public profile and said Josh was praying for Joseph during the legal process.
Meanwhile, newly revealed records also showed that Josh’s wife, Anna Duggar, contacted Joseph after his arrest to offer emotional support. In her message, Anna told him that she and Josh were praying for him, offered financial assistance for his inmate account, and reminded him not to discuss legal matters over monitored phone calls or messages.
Anna has continued standing by Josh throughout his imprisonment despite repeated legal setbacks. The couple shares seven children, and sources close to the family have claimed that relatives have encouraged Anna to leave her husband, though she has remained supportive while he continues fighting his conviction.
Josh’s latest appeal represents another attempt to challenge the sentence that could keep him in federal prison until 2033. Whether the court allows the appeal to proceed now depends largely on its ruling regarding the disputed filing deadline.
