A North Carolina family is mourning an unimaginable second loss after a U.S. Postal Service employee was fatally shot only months after her husband passed away.
Authorities say 52-year-old letter carrier Kimberly McMullen was delivering mail in Charlotte when she was shot on June 30. She later died from her injuries, leaving behind loved ones who say they are struggling to comprehend losing both Kimberly and her husband within the same year.
Postal Carrier Attacked While on Delivery Route
According to the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department, officers responded to reports of a shooting in northeast Charlotte during the afternoon of June 30.
When first responders arrived, they found McMullen suffering from life-threatening injuries while she was still on her mail route.
She was transported to a nearby hospital, where she later died despite emergency medical treatment. Authorities have not indicated that the shooting was connected to a robbery or her work with the Postal Service.
Family Had Already Endured a Recent Loss
McMullen’s death comes only months after the passing of her husband, according to family members.

Police arrested a suspect following the investigation and charged 38-year-old Demond Lamont Kelly in connection with McMullen’s death.
