From their first meeting, Prince William recognized “something very special” in Kate Middleton. In an interview in November 2010, when he gave his girlfriend an engagement ring that had belonged to his mother, the late Princess Diana, he affirmed that Kate was his destined woman. However, before officially becoming husband and wife, Kate and William almost missed each other.
Recalling their brief separation, William said that they were both too young and still in college. They needed space to grow and find their own paths. This period of separation actually helped strengthen their relationship later on.
Kate admitted she wasn’t happy about the breakup. However, the experience helped her become stronger, understand herself better, and avoid being completely swept away in a relationship at such a young age.
After many years together, William finally proposed to Kate during a trip to Kenya. He revealed he had planned it beforehand, but needed the right moment to do it. The natural beauty of Africa made the moment perfect. Meanwhile, Kate said that although she had somewhat anticipated it, the proposal was still a big surprise.
From college friendship to fated love

Their story began at St Andrews University, where Kate first caught William’s attention while performing in a student fashion show in 2002. From close friends, studying, playing sports, and sharing daily life, their feelings for each other gradually developed.
Initially, they only considered each other friends. William had even dated other people before. However, after spending time together, he realized his feelings for Kate were growing deeper.
By their third year of university, they began to be more open about their relationship. A picture of William holding Kate’s arm during a skiing trip in Switzerland in 2004 confirmed their romance to the media. After their relationship became public, Kate quickly became the focus of media attention. Despite maintaining a polished image, the media pressure only increased.
In 2007, after nearly four years together, William unexpectedly broke up with Kate. According to many sources, a conversation lasting about 30 minutes ended their relationship when they realized they weren’t truly aligned on their future goals.

The event was deeply hurtful to Kate, especially since the breakup happened over the phone. However, she didn’t let herself fall apart. Instead, Kate focused on personal activities, participating in sports projects and maintaining an active social life.
Just a few months after their separation, William realized his decision was a mistake. He proactively contacted her again and invited Kate to a costume party. From there, the two gradually reconciled and officially reunited in mid-2007.
Although he had initially expressed reluctance to marry in his twenties, William finally proposed to Kate when he turned 28, as planned. On April 29, 2011, the couple officially married at Westminster Abbey, marking a beautiful ending to their challenging love journey.

Looking back, William once shared that life’s challenges are what help people grow and shape themselves.
From a tumultuous college romance, their story has become a modern symbol of love, perseverance, and maturity within the British Royal Family.
