In a heartbreaking turn of events, the family of former NFL star Doug Martin is taking legal action, claiming that police misconduct and inadequate medical response contributed to his tragic death last year. The wrongful death lawsuit, filed in California, seeks accountability from the city of Oakland, its police department, and an ambulance service.
According to the lawsuit, the 36-year-old athlete experienced a mental health crisis on October 18, prompting his mother, Leslie, to call for help as he sought refuge at a neighbor’s home. Reports indicate that Oakland police located Martin in a basement, where the situation escalated.
The court documents allege that officers restrained Martin face down, applying pressure to his back. After some time, they reportedly turned him onto his side, but by then, he was unresponsive. The lawsuit claims that officers mistook his condition for sleep until one finally called for medical assistance.
Tragically, the paramedics from FALCK NORCAL did not arrive until over 15 minutes after the initial call, and the lawsuit argues that Martin did not receive timely medical care during this critical period.
Doug Martin, who was born in Oakland and raised in Stockton, had a remarkable career in the NFL, culminating in his final season with the Raiders. He gained recognition at Boise State, earning first-team All-Mountain West honors before being drafted in the first round by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2012. Over seven seasons, he amassed impressive stats, including 5,536 rushing yards and 30 touchdowns, with a standout year in 2015 that earned him All-Pro recognition.

As the legal battle unfolds, many are left wondering how this tragedy could have been prevented and what changes might be needed in emergency response protocols.
