King Charles III is reportedly hoping to mend his relationship with Prince Harry and may spend time with his son’s family privately if they return to the UK next month.
According to the Daily Mail, Prince Harry, the Duchess of Sussex Meghan, and their two children are expected to make a rare visit to the UK in mid-July, to kick off the one-year countdown to the 2027 Invictus Games in Birmingham. If the plan goes ahead, this will be the first time the four-person family has returned to the UK in four years.
Royal expert Phil Dampier believes King Charles III wants to mend his relationship with his youngest son and especially wants to see his grandchildren. He suggests the king will likely arrange a private reunion at a royal residence to avoid public attention.
“I think the king wants to reconcile with his son and wants to see his grandchildren. He wouldn’t want the meeting to become a media sensation,” Phil Dampier said.
However, this expert suggests that Queen Camilla may not be enthusiastic about the meeting due to what was mentioned about her in Harry’s memoir, *Spare*. He also believes the likelihood of Prince Harry meeting Prince William and Princess Kate is almost zero at this time.
Royal commentator Richard Palmer revealed that there is still apprehension within the royal family towards the Sussexes after a series of controversial revelations since they stepped down from their roles as senior members of the royal family in 2020. Royal aides are reportedly concerned that any meeting could be exploited to serve the couple’s commercial projects.
Nevertheless, Richard Palmer believes that Archie and Lilibet’s return to England will increase the likelihood of King Charles III spending time with his youngest son’s family, and could initiate the process of mending the long-standing rifts.
An associate of Harry’s in Los Angeles told the Telegraph that the relationship between the king and his son has “warmed up”. According to this source, Harry has always wanted his children to meet their grandfather and reconnect with his homeland.
Prince Harry has publicly criticized the British royal family in interviews with Oprah Winfrey, a Netflix documentary series, and his memoir Spare, further straining his relationship with his family.
However, the father and son reportedly had a private 54-minute meeting at Clarence House last September, seen as a first step in an effort to mend their relationship. It remains unclear whether King Charles III will officially meet with Harry’s family during his visit next month.
