How Riley Green's Music Career Helped Him Tap into His Character's 'Vulnerability' on 'Marshals' (Exclusive)

Riley Green is stepping into uncharted territory with his acting debut in the highly anticipated Yellowstone spinoff, Marshals. The country music star, known for hits like “I Wish Grandpas Never Died,” has taken on the role of Garrett, marking a significant shift in his career that he describes as both exciting and challenging.

In an exclusive chat with PEOPLE, Green shared how this opportunity came about organically through his friendship with actor Luke Grimes. “I was trying to help him out in Nashville as he was starting his music journey,” Green revealed. “He suggested I give acting a shot, and I was already contemplating it.”

Prior to his role in Marshals, Green’s experience in acting was limited to music videos where he played himself. However, stepping onto the set for the first time felt refreshing. “Everyone was so welcoming, and I quickly found my rhythm with their feedback,” he noted. He appreciated the change from the repetitive nature of touring, where he often plays the same songs night after night.

To prepare for his character, a former Navy SEAL grappling with deep emotional struggles, Green sought guidance from an acting coach. “I learned to focus less on memorizing lines and more on reacting to my scene partners,” he explained. Portraying a character with such vulnerability was a significant challenge for him, especially since he lacks military experience. “It wasn’t easy to dive into the emotional depths of someone who has faced so much trauma,” he admitted.

Interestingly, Green found parallels between acting and performing his emotional songs. “When you write a song, those feelings are raw and real. But performing them repeatedly requires you to maintain that authenticity, even when the emotion might not be as fresh,” he said. This realization helped him channel the necessary feelings into his character.

As for the future, Green expressed enthusiasm about the possibility of pursuing more acting roles alongside his music career. “If I could settle into one place while not touring, I’d love to explore this world further,” he shared.

With a busy schedule ahead, including shows in Australia and a new album release, Green is clearly motivated by the connection he has with his audience. “Seeing people engage with my music inspires me to create even more,” he said.

As fans eagerly await his episodes on Marshals, one has to wonder: could this be just the beginning of Riley Green’s journey in acting?
