Taylor Sheridan's New Action Thriller Officially Dethrones 'Yellowstone'

Taylor Sheridan, the mastermind behind the Yellowstone franchise, is once again making headlines as his latest action-packed series, Marshals, officially surpasses its predecessor in the ratings game. This marks a significant moment for the acclaimed creator, whose influence on television continues to grow.

After a polarizing conclusion in December 2024, Yellowstone fans have been eagerly tuning into the new chapters of Sheridan’s universe. Marshals, featuring the return of Luke Grimes as Kayce Dutton, has quickly become a sensation. This series showcases Kayce’s evolution from a Navy SEAL to a rancher and now a U.S. Marshal, as he fights to uphold justice in the rugged landscapes of Montana. Meanwhile, the Dutton legacy thrives in another spin-off, Dutton Ranch, which follows the fierce Beth Dutton, played by Kelly Reilly, and Rip Wheeler, portrayed by Cole Hauser, as they navigate new challenges.

Marshals has made a remarkable debut, claiming the title of the most-watched scripted series premiere on CBS since Yellowstone’s launch in 2018. According to Nielsen ratings, the show attracted an impressive 9.52 million viewers on its opening night, with total viewership climbing to 20.7 million. It has even outperformed CBS’s Tracker, becoming the most-watched broadcast show on television.

However, despite its impressive numbers, Marshals has received mixed reviews, with critics rating it at 45% on Rotten Tomatoes and audiences giving it a mere 27% on the Popcornmeter. Yet, viewers remain captivated, proving that the Sheridan legacy still holds strong.

On the streaming front, Dutton Ranch is making waves on Paramount+, setting a new benchmark for the platform. The series premiered on May 15 with two episodes, showcasing Rip and Beth as they gamble on a fresh start in South Texas, only to find themselves entangled in conflicts with rival ranchers.

Dutton Ranch has been met with enthusiastic acclaim, boasting scores of 89% from critics and 84% from audiences. It shattered records by attracting 12.9 million viewers globally in its first week, surpassing the previous record held by The Madison. Currently, Dutton Ranch is leading the Paramount+ charts in the U.S., alongside its predecessors.

While Paramount+ has yet to announce a second season for Dutton Ranch, the show’s success makes it a likely candidate for renewal. In contrast, Marshals has already been greenlit for a second season, with filming underway and a first look already revealed.

As Sheridan continues to dominate the television landscape, fans are left wondering what thrilling adventures lie ahead for the Dutton family and their expanding universe. What new challenges will they face next?
