In a 𝓈𝒽𝓸𝒸𝓀𝒾𝓃𝑔 display of family tension, Mackenzie Shirilla’s father, Steve, referred to his daughter as “dumb” during a heated encounter with police following her arrest on double murder charges. Newly released bodycam footage captures the emotional confrontation that unfolded at the Strongsville Police Department after Mackenzie was taken into custody in November 2022.
The incident occurred shortly after Mackenzie, then 18, was arrested for her involvement in a tragic car crash that claimed the lives of her ex-boyfriend, Dominic Russo, and friend, Davion Flanagan. In the footage, an agitated Steve can be seen demanding to speak with Mackenzie, insisting that officers were not permitted to communicate with her due to legal restrictions.
“I need to speak to my daughter,” he pleads, gesturing animatedly. “You guys aren’t allowed to speak to her at all – that’s from the lawyer.” His frustration escalates as he questions why Mackenzie is not allowed a phone call, and he expresses disbelief over the police’s actions.

As tensions rise, Steve lashes out, declaring, “Yeah, she’s a dumb 18-year-old that just turned 18.” His wife, Natalie, attempts to intervene, even laughingly telling him to stop labeling their daughter in such a negative light. However, Steve remains adamant, voicing concerns that others will take advantage of her situation.

The exchange takes a dramatic turn as Steve criticizes the timing of Mackenzie’s arrest, expressing outrage that police executed the warrant on a weekend. “It’s just unbelievable…it’s just beyond me,” he exclaims, pacing the lobby in frustration. Meanwhile, the officer calmly responds, emphasizing their adherence to legal protocols.

Mackenzie, who is now 20, was convicted in August 2023 of deliberately crashing her car into a brick wall, resulting in the deaths of Russo and Flanagan. She is currently serving two concurrent 15 years to life sentences in an Ohio women’s prison but is appealing her conviction.

The Shirilla family has faced significant public scrutiny, particularly following the release of a Netflix documentary titled “The Crash,” which highlights their parenting style and the circumstances surrounding Mackenzie’s actions. In the film, Steve controversially remarks on his daughter’s marijuana use, stating he has no issue with it as long as she avoids harder drugs. This has led to backlash, resulting in his suspension from his teaching position shortly after the documentary aired.
As Steve continues to defend his daughter’s innocence, questions linger about the family’s dynamic and their approach to the unfolding tragedy. What does this mean for Mackenzie’s future and the family’s journey ahead?
