After nearly a decade without a solo studio album, Wynonna Judd is stepping back into the spotlight with what may be the most vulnerable project of her career.

The country music icon has officially announced The Hard Truth, her first solo studio album in 10 years, set for release on October 2. Alongside the announcement, Judd also unveiled the album’s lead single, “Kentucky Queen,” giving fans their first taste of a deeply personal chapter in her musical journey.
In an emotional statement, Judd explained that the album explores themes of heartbreak, healing, faith, survival, loss, and personal growth. She described the project as unlike anything she has recorded before, saying the songs reflect where she has been, what she has overcome, and who she has become after some of the most difficult years of her life.
The album arrives following an incredibly challenging period for the singer.
In recent years, Judd has openly discussed navigating grief after the death of her mother and longtime musical partner, Naomi Judd. Rather than allowing tragedy to define her future, Wynonna says music became a way to process her emotions and rediscover her strength.
Even the album title feels intentional.
“The Hard Truth” represents a willingness to embrace honesty over perfection, with Judd admitting that the recording process pushed her to confront emotions she had previously kept hidden. According to the singer, making the record required courage, vulnerability, and a commitment to telling the truth even during the most uncomfortable moments.
The project was produced by her husband, Cactus Moser, and reportedly took five years to complete. The lengthy process allowed Judd to carefully shape a collection of songs that reflect both pain and resilience while marking a new artistic chapter in her career.
Fans won’t have to wait until October to see her perform the new material.
Judd is preparing to hit the road with Melissa Etheridge on their upcoming “Raised on Radio” tour, which begins later this month and will bring the legendary performers to audiences across the country.
For longtime fans, the announcement feels especially significant.
While Wynonna has remained active through touring and special projects over the years, The Hard Truth marks her first full solo studio album since 2016, ending a wait that many listeners feared might never come to an end.
Now, with a new single, a new album, and a renewed sense of purpose, Wynonna Judd is proving that some stories can only be told after living through them.
And according to her, this time she’s telling the whole truth.
