In a surprising twist following her acquittal in the murder case of her former boyfriend, Boston police officer John O’Keefe, Karen Read has shared that she’s enjoying a rather unexpected perk: free meals. During her appearance on the “Today” show, Read expressed gratitude for the overwhelming support she has received since the jury’s verdict cleared her of all homicide charges.
When co-host Craig Melvin raised the sensitive topic of public perception, Read reflected on the mixed reactions she faces. “You have to know that when you walk down the street, there are lots of people who look at Karen Read and think, ‘Oh, there’s that woman who got away with killing her ex-boyfriend who’s a cop,'” Melvin noted. However, Read countered that she hasn’t encountered much negativity in her day-to-day life.
“I don’t pay for meals anywhere I go,” she revealed. “From grocery stores to restaurants, I’m met with kindness and support. My parents even get help with their groceries.” She emphasized that the positive response extends beyond Boston, reaching supporters throughout Massachusetts and even during her travels.
Despite the public support, Read is still grappling with the aftermath of the trial. While she has been acquitted, her professional license remains suspended, leaving her without a job. “I’m still working on the case,” she stated, indicating her ongoing efforts to address the fallout from the investigation.
The legal saga began after O’Keefe was found dead in January 2022, buried under snow outside a colleague’s home during a blizzard. Prosecutors alleged that Read had struck him with her SUV and fled the scene. However, her defense team pointed to significant issues in the investigation, including the conduct of a lead detective who was dismissed for inappropriate behavior.
After two trials, the first resulting in a hung jury, Read was ultimately found not guilty of all homicide charges, though she was convicted of driving under the influence. Now, she is pursuing a lawsuit against the Massachusetts State Police and the Canton Police Department, claiming misconduct and a culture of bias within the investigation.
“This was always our plan,” Read said about the lawsuit. “I had to save my own life first. I can’t do anything if I’m not free.” Her attorney, Alan Jackson, emphasized that the lawsuit aims to expose what he describes as “institutional corruption” in Massachusetts law enforcement.
Additionally, Read faces a wrongful death lawsuit from O’Keefe’s family. When asked if she had a message for them, she simply replied, “I don’t have anything to say to his family,” reflecting on her past relationship with O’Keefe and the time they spent together.
