Get ready, fans! The highly anticipated live-action adaptation of “Solo Leveling” is officially in the works, and Netflix is betting big on this project. Based on Chugong’s immensely popular web novel and webtoon, which has racked up an astonishing 14.3 billion views worldwide, this series is set to take the streaming platform by storm.
Filming for “Solo Leveling” began in May 2026, slightly delayed from its initial April start date. Leading the cast is Byeon Woo-seok, the breakout star from “Lovely Runner,” who will portray Sung Jinwoo, an E-rank hunter who unexpectedly gains a powerful system after surviving a perilous dungeon raid. This transformation allows him to level up his abilities and ultimately become humanity’s last line of defense against terrifying creatures emerging from interdimensional gates.
Joining him is the talented Han So-hee, known for her gripping roles in “My Name” and “Gyeongseong Creature.” She takes on the role of Cha Hae-in, an elite S-rank hunter and fan-favorite love interest. Her impressive swordsmanship and stoic personality have made her a beloved character among fans.

The supporting cast features Kang Yoo-seok as Yoo Jin-ho, Jinwoo’s devoted ally who brings comic relief to the series, along with Kang Mi-na in a yet-to-be-revealed role. Co-directors Lee Hae-jun and Kim Byung-woo, known for their work on “Ashfall” and “Castaway on the Moon,” are helming the seven-episode first season, backed by a top-notch global VFX team. They aim to recreate the breathtaking battles, shadow soldiers, and supernatural action that fans adore from the webtoon.

This adaptation marks a significant move for Netflix’s Korean content strategy, especially following the phenomenal success of “Squid Game” and the early renewal of “One Piece” for a live-action continuation. However, the pressure is on, as the anime adaptation by A-1 Pictures set a high bar, becoming Crunchyroll’s most-watched series and sweeping nine categories at the 2025 Crunchyroll Anime Awards, including Anime of the Year.

As the world eagerly awaits to see if Byeon Woo-seok can embody Jinwoo’s journey from an underdog to a formidable shadow monarch, and whether the visual effects will live up to the anime’s stunning action sequences, fans are left wondering: Can Netflix break the live-action anime curse that has plagued many adaptations before? With filming now in progress and two of Korea’s most visually captivating stars leading the charge, “Solo Leveling” is gearing up to make waves, and the anticipation is palpable. What are your thoughts on this ambitious project?
