Young M.A. is sharing insight into the complexities of sexual identity.
In a new interview on the Club Shay Shay podcast, the “Ooouuu” rapper, 34, opened up about how “most women” she’s dated identify as straight and continue to do so after getting romantically involved with her.
The topic arose as host Shannon Sharpe asked Young M.A. about her favorite part of a woman. “Eyes, because you see they soul,” she said. “The eyes is catching me. Of course, you got to still be a beautiful woman that got yourself together — but the eyes is what pulls me in first.”
She added, “You know why I say it’s the eyes? ‘Cause that’s how I would know if a girl is attracted to me because most women l’ve dated was straight.”
Sharpe appeared confused and asked Young M.A. if she’s “flipped” women’s sexuality from straight to queer. “I wouldn’t say flip. See, a lot of people get that misconstrued,” she explained. “Women that I end up dating don’t mean they fully just gay now. No, they still like men, they just attracted to me, and that’s it. And after me, they move back on to men. That’s it.”
The rapper noted that a woman’s “eyes” let her know if they’re going to be a match. “I’ve got to see it in your eyes if you attracted to me,” she said.
Young M.A. (real name Katorah Kasanova Marrero) then specified, “I prefer straight.”
Sharpe wondered how a woman could identify as straight if she’s dating another woman, and Young M.A. replied, “I’m a different type of person, though. I’m not, like, ‘gay rapper-ish’ type, you know? I’m just me. I’m just me that loves women.”
Young M.A. has long been open about her queer identity, though she’s spoken in the past about not wanting to place labels on herself.
Elsewhere in the Club Shay Shay interview, the rapper said she’s currently in a relationship with a woman. “She ain’t no famous girl,” she noted.
On Friday, May 19, Young M.A. will release her new album, KWEEN. The project is set to feature collaborations with G Herbo, Tory Lanez and Kavi Synatra.
