A California man who admitted to carrying out a horrifying double murder inside an Anaheim apartment is now facing life behind bars after a jury ruled he was legally sane during the killings.

30-year-old Ramy Hany Mounir Fahim pleaded guilty to murdering his co-worker, Griffin Cuomo, and Cuomo’s roommate, Jonathan Bahm, in April 2022. But despite the guilty plea, jurors still had to determine whether Fahim understood the nature of his actions at the time of the attack.

After hearing disturbing details about the case, the jury rejected Fahim’s insanity defense.

According to prosecutors, Fahim spent hours lurking around the victims’ apartment complex before launching what authorities described as a calculated ambush. A security guard reportedly spotted him on the roof of the building before the murders, and investigators later determined he had been waiting for the right moment to attack.

Authorities say Fahim first targeted Cuomo, a co-worker at a wealth management firm where the two worked together. Cuomo was stabbed more than 40 times with what prosecutors called a “hunting dagger.”

The violence allegedly escalated even further when Bahm attempted to call 911 for help.

Prosecutors say Fahim forced his way through the apartment while Bahm was still on the emergency call and fatally stabbed him as well — allegedly to eliminate a witness before police could arrive.

As investigators dug deeper into the case, they reportedly uncovered disturbing writings on Fahim’s computer discussing serial killers, victim selection, and whether someone could scream after having their throat slit. Co-workers had also allegedly become concerned about his increasingly erratic behavior prior to the murders.

Authorities believe Fahim had grown angry and resentful toward Cuomo at work, reportedly accusing him of micromanaging and assigning excessive tasks.

“The violence carried out in that apartment was not an act of insanity,” Orange County District Attorney Todd Spitzer said after the verdict. “He carefully calculated how to gain access to the apartment building and waited for hours until he had the perfect opportunity to ambush his victim and execute a witness.”

Despite admitting guilt last month to two counts of first-degree murder, along with special circumstance allegations including lying in wait and murder to avoid arrest, Fahim’s final sentencing depended on whether jurors believed he was sane during the attack.

Now that the jury has ruled against the insanity defense, Fahim is expected to receive two consecutive life sentences without the possibility of parole.

Friends and loved ones remembered both victims as compassionate young men whose lives were tragically cut short. Bahm was described by friends as “the best of us,” while Cuomo’s former professor praised his kindness, passion, and contagious curiosity.
