After nearly a decade in development, the Highlander reboot is finally moving forward with Chad Stahelski in the director’s chair and a cast led by Henry Cavill as the immortal Scottish swordsman Connor MacLeod. Principal photography began in January 2026 in Scotland, following multiple delays that included Cavill sustaining an injury during pre-production sword training, and the project is now targeting a theatrical release in 2027 under Amazon MGM Studios and the United Artists banner.
Russell Crowe joins the ensemble as Juan Sanchez-Villalobos Ramirez, the ancient mentor who teaches Connor the history of the Immortals and trains him in swordsmanship, a role originally played by Sean Connery in the 1986 classic. Dave Bautista stars as The Kurgan, the most feared of the Immortals and the primary antagonist who seeks the Prize at any cost. The supporting cast includes Karen Gillan as Heather MacLeod, Djimon Hounsou as Sunda Kastagir, Jeremy Irons as the leader of The Watchers, and WWE superstar Drew McIntyre as Connor’s brother Angus MacLeod. Stahelski, who built his reputation directing the John Wick franchise, has stated he wants to honor the original mythology while delivering something fresh rather than a straightforward remake. The film reportedly carries a budget of approximately $180 million, which contributed to Lionsgate stepping away from the project before Amazon MGM Studios acquired the rights. Stahelski has also confirmed that the iconic Queen soundtrack will be incorporated into the reboot, with Tyler Bates composing the original score.
