A high school biology teacher in Georgia is accused of sexually abusing a student on two occasions, including once inside a classroom closet.

Maris Nichols, 25, is facing two counts of sexual assault by a person with supervisory or disciplinary authority, according to KGNS.

She appeared before a judge on Friday, May 8, WSB-TV reported, at which time her bond was set at $40,000.

At the time of the alleged assaults, Nichols was teaching at Alexander High School in Douglasville, a suburb of Atlanta located 20 miles west of the state capital.

“Warrants accuse her of having intercourse with a student on two occasions, once on April 23 in a closet at Alexander High, where she teaches, and once on May 2 in a Hummer in a residential driveway,” 11Alive reported.

Officials at the school notified parents of the situation the day before Nichols was taken into custody.

“The Douglas County School System is deeply troubled by allegations against an individual associated with one of our schools,” the district said in a statement. “Upon learning of the alleged misconduct, the district immediately launched an investigation.”

11Alive reported that law enforcement had been at the school on Wednesday afternoon investigating the matter.

Nichols is no longer named or pictured as a teacher on the high school’s website, but the district has not said what the status of her job is at this time.

She had been booked into the Douglas County Jail but records show she is no longer in custody.
